Slow Motion Video Inspiration

For my music video, I would like to include some shots of slow motion images. I have researched into slow motion music videos and found a few that I would like to base a lot of the shots in my music video in. I will not do the whole music video in slow motion, but some shots may need to be in slow motion to give serious effect. These are the two videos that I like the most as they have shots that I could include in my music video. I have collected a few shots of multiple music slow motion music videos.
I like the idea of using slow slow motion shots in my music video as i think that it is a very effective way to slow the audience emotions, meanings or feelings. For example, in my music video, I may use it to portray the artists' feelings towards not being a 'White Teeth Teen' by making her do small actions that are done by people who are not in the 'popular' groups at school. (e.g. on her own walking down the street, listening to different music, going through her clothes which are different or even a close up of her putting her dark lipstick/makeup on.)
This is a good idea as I will strongly be able to portray the differences between 'white teeth teens' and average people.

Recce Shots

This is a few of the recce shots that I need for my music video. I may use all of these in my music video for the still shots which are used often in the artist I have chosen's music video I am basing my own on. I like all of these shots as they each have an individual focal point like the front door, the green plant against the brick wall and the black garage door.
I may not be able to use these shots as weather may change and they will not look as good in the rain/dark settings. I will have to work around the weather if I would like these shots included in my music video.

Costume Ideas

This is the costume type that I will likely use for my music video as it relates to Lorde's style very well as she mainly wears black/dark colours and a red lipstick.
From the music video by Lorde that I analysed, she was wearing a white tshirt with a large necklace which I have interpreted into my own costume idea. However, with the tshirt, I may use black or white, it will depend on the background that I will use for each time the my actress is lip-syncing as I do not want them to clash with each other.
The black jeans will be used as they will very rarely be seen throughout the video but I would like them to match the whole outfit. This is the same for the black boots.
The make-up I am going to use on my actress will be a dark red lipstick to give her an 'edgy' and 'mysterious' look, which fits with my genre very well. The eyeshadow will also fit with this idea.

Magazine Mock Up

This is the magazine mock up I have created for when I create my final magazine advert.
I like the idea of this mock up as it is laid out very well and like most of the magazine adverts I have researched. The layout is very simplistic but it is very similar to Lorde's magazine adverts, which is what I am aiming for.
The background for the advert will be plain white with bold black text on the front of it. This means that the image can also be in colour which I would be unable to do if the background was black.
This will be a different idea to Lorde's usual style of advertisement , however I do not want the advert to be exactly like Lorde's, I would like to imput my own style into it too.
The image on the magazine advert is very like Lorde's style of image due to her hair almost being the main focal point of the image. This is a style I would like to include in my advert as the person I will use has similar hair to this artist and I can incorporate that idea into my own magazine advert.

Track Permission

This is the email I have sent to Universal Music Group which is one of the labels that my artist is signed to.

Digipak Mock Up

This is my hand drawn mock up of the digipak I created to give me an insight into what my final digipak wil look like. I like this idea that I have created as it fits well with my genre and artist. The inside of the digipak will have a black background which contains the cd, a small lyric booklet and a long shot image of the artist. On the outer section of the digipak, the background is white, which is a contrast compared to the inside. On the outside, there is the front cover with the album title, artist name, artist image and a subheading. On the centre of the outer section, there is the song titles listed in order in a bold black font against a white background alongside the left hand outer section which has a close-up image of the artist.
On the CD, there is the logo that Lorde uses on many of her CDs. which I have drawn onto the top of it.
The small lyric booklet will be on the inside of the digipak, however this may bulk up the digipak as it may be a thick booklet. If i definitely interpret this idea into my final digipak, I will make sure that it is a thin booklet by making the lyrics inside small but big enough for the average person to be able to read it.

Moodboard - Mise-en-scene

I have created this moodboard on behalf of the inspiration for the mise-en-scene used in my music video.
As most of my video will only include mid to close up shots of the artist, I have researched into indie pop artists to inspire me for my music video. In this moodboard, mainly 'punky' styles are included due to the use of leather jackets, dark lipstick and a wide use of black clothing. However, in some of the images, a 'sweet innocent' style is interpreted as I may need this costume inspiration as my music video is mainly about the contrast of people and how the contrast is included in different social groups.
The artists in this moodboard include Florence and the Machine, Lorde, Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX, and Taylor Swift who all have individual styles but they all fit into my costume/mise-en-scene inspiration.

Moodboard - Camera Angles and Shot Types

This is the moodboard I have created for camera angle and shot type inspiration. I have collected these images from other music videos that I have watched throughout my research of music videos within this genre. Most of the camera angles are close ups of the artist's face, locations and mid shots. I will use this moodboard to help me with my own music video.
The artist's in this moodboard include Taylor Swift, Lorde, Gotye, Charli XCX and Rihanna.

Magazine Advert Analysis - Lorde

Text/Font
This advert is all in capitals and a white colour. I think that this style of font is very effective as it is bold and exciting. Also, it is all in capitals which may suggest the album is simple but bold and makes a statement. However, on this magazine advert, I don't think that there is a date on it, so on my own advert, I will include one to give customers more information on the album. Below the main title on the magazine advert,  there is more text that gives more information about the album as is explains that is is a '#1 Album', 'Grammy Winner', 'Song of the Year', '#1 US Billboard Chart' and '#1 UK Singles Chart'. This will help promote the album as it is shown to be very sucessful and well recognised in the public eye.

Costume
The costume/makeup on this magazine advert is mainly black and simplistic. The artist has a large necklace on and her natural thick wavy hair against a black background. Her costume fits very well with the theme of this advert and I will imput sections of this into my own magazine advert. The idea of the artist wearing all black may suggest that she is rebelling, and also this connects with the idea of her wearing large necklaces to rebel. This gives a mysterious atmosphere and may draw attention to the album so people may be more likely to buy it. The facial expression on this magazine advert is very mysterious also as she is looking directly to the camera, suggesting she is aiming this advert at the person who is reading it, however she seems slighly shy as she is looking down a little bit.

Layout
This magazine advert is very well laid out on the page as it is able to show all the information about the new album in a stylish and fashionable way. The artist's name and album title is on the heading of the advert and is in the largest letters to catch attention and be bright and recognisable. On the right of the magazine advert, there is an image which shows the front of the album cover which will be able to help people find and recognise her album in a shop, which will possibly also help the sales of the album.

Digipak Analysis - Charli XCX

I have chosen Charli XCX's digipak/CD to analyse as I have looked closely into her work previously and I like her style of work.

Text/Font
The text on this digipak is all in bold capitals which is also the style of some artist's digipak's that I have looked at. The text is white, like the background of the front cover, however there is a small faded out patch on the top of the digipak which I think is very effective and subtly stands out. I like the style and colour scheme of the digipak as it is bright and eyecatching but also very stylish and fitting with the genre it is in (indie pop). The black background against the white text that is on the back of the digipak is very effective and simple but it is a very useful style (including most of the other digipak's that I have researched) that I will use in my own digipak design.
Also, the text on the CD itself, is simplistic and minimal and easily shows that the CD is by Charli XCX. The text fits very well against the CD due to the 'C' curled around the circle in the centre and the 'X' is either side.

Image
The only image on the digipak is on the front of it which is an image of Charli XCX. The image includes some bright colours on her clothes, in her hair and make-up. The costume on this CD is very reckless and daring as she is wearing a leather sleeveless jacket with a mesh long sleeved top underheath. Her black jeans are ripped at the knees which suggests she is careless of what people may think about her. Her makeup is very dark and bold which may suggest what the music on the CD may be like. I will more than likely include an image of the person I have chosen to lip-sync in my video. There is also a small sign on the front of the CD cover suggesting 'Parental Advisory Explicit Content'. This is extra information for the buyer of the CD.

Layout
The layout of this CD is very basic which is like a lot of the other digipak/cd covers I am researching. This is mainly due to the fact that on the front cover, there is a picture of the artist, their name on the top and their album name on the bottom. Followed by the back cover listing each song on the album. It seems slighly effortless, however I believe that this is very effective as it is able to show exactly what is on the album and an idea of what it may be like due to the presentation of the mise-en-scene and the colour scheme of the album.

Lyrics Analysis (Lorde - White Teeth Teens)

"White Teeth Teens"
[Verse 1:]
We wouldn't be seen dead here in the day
I guess you're lucky that it's dark now
And if I like it then we'll stay
Impress the empress, take a shot now
 [Pre-chorus:]
We got the glow in our mouths
White teeth teens are out
White teeth teens are up for it
 [Chorus:]
I know you love it when the hairpins start to drop
I like your reckoning, but we got our methods
And there's nothing here to stop, to stop this
 [Verse 2:]
If you want we'll help tonight to split its seams
Give the bruises out like gifts
You'll get the picture of your dreams
I won't be smiling
But the notes from my admirers
Fill the dashboard just the same
 [Pre-chorus]
[Chorus:]

I know you love it when the hairpins start to drop
I like your reckoning, but we got our methods
And there's nothing here to stop, to stop us when we're up for it
I know you love it when the hairpins start to drop
I like your reckoning, but we got our methods
And there's nothing here to stop, to stop this
(And everything works out so good
I wear the robe like no one could)
 [Bridge:]
I'll let you in on something big
I am not a white teeth teen
I tried to join but never did
The way they are, the way they seem is something else, it's in the blood
Their molars blinking like the lights, in the underpass where we all sit
And do nothing
And love it
 [Outro:]
And everything works out so good
I wear the robe like no one could
We got the glow in our mouths
White teeth teens are out
White teeth teens are out

These are the lyrics to the song I have chosen for my music video.
I have researched the meaning of this song and discovered that the Urban Dictionary suggesting for the term 'White Teeth Teens' means 'The popular kids at school'. This suggests that 'popular' students are be superficial due to the idea of them having falsely white teeth.
There is a line in the song saying 'The way they are, the way they seem is something else, it's in the blood', which possibly could mean that the popular people in school usually are able to fit in with that stereotype due to it running in their blood.
Also a line in the song which has a string meaning is 'I am not a white teeth teen, I tried to join but never did'. This lyric suggests that she tried to be popular, one of the cool ones and fit in, however she discovered that she did not want that as she liked not fitting in with the popular crowd and being her own person instead of fitting in with the popular stereotypes.

Initial Ideas / Brainstorm

I have created a mindmap on Spicynodes.com to present my ideas for my music video.

Inspirations / Directors

I have researached popular music video directors and found a few possibly directors I may be able to follow their ideas of style in the video.
Directors I have found:
  • Director X - This director has helped to create many popular, well known music video's for the past 17 years. A lot of his music videos contain a lot of mise-en-scene, and camera angles and shot types that I would like to interpret into my own video. Examples of artists that this director has worked with include Drake, Little Mix, Iggy Azalea and Jamie Foxx.

  • David Wilson - Most of his filmography is animated and uses lots of effects, however he has directed the music video for 'Titanium' by David Guetta. I believe that this video is effective with shots and editing. This is due to th4e fact that most of the shots are bright, some in slow motion, with a simple variety of shot lengths.

  • Colin Tiley - This is the director of many music videos for popular artists this year. I specifically like his music video for 'Mirror Man' by Ella Henderson. There is a lot of shots in the video that I would like to include in my own.

  • Hiro Murai - This director has created a video including a lot of the shot types that I would like to include in my own music video. The video is 'Cheerleader' by St. Vincent.

Music Video Analysis - Rita Ora / Charli XCX

I have created a prezi to analyse the music video of 'Doing It' by Rita Ora and Charli XCX.

Digipak Analysis - Marina and the Diamonds

Here I have started to analyse the digipak/CD cover for Marina and the Diamonds' album, The Family Jewels.

Font/Text
The font on this digipak is bold but does not interfere with the image on the front and back. It is in white in the form of a handwritten style. The text has the artist's name with the album name in a smaller font beneath it. On the back of the digipak, the font is in the same font in a very creative style as is is written in a slanted form, sweeping across the cover along the shape of her hair and back of her head. The text on the front of the digipak matches the text on the CD however it is in black font against a dark grey metallic colour on the CD.

Image
The images on this CD cover are all very similar, with each side of it showing the artists' face, just is different positions.  On the front cover, the artist is lying down with just her head and neck showing. Her body is coming in fron the right of the cover and she is making eye contact with the camera which may suggest her looking at you and telling you to buy the CD. Her hair is flowing underneath her as she is lying down but it is able to fill almost half of the cover. On the back cover, her head is falling backwards as she is leaning on her elbows. This is also very effective as again, she is looking directly at the camera. She is presented to be wearing no clothes as just skin is showing. Like the front cover, her hair is covering a lot of the back cover. On the inside of the CD, there is a close us shot of the artist, however she is covering her face with her fingers, stereotypically in the shape of a gun over her left eye, mouth and nose. I believe this may be a sign of her suggesting she is courageous or possibly daring. She is also looking at the camera. Her makeup is very simple with no major dark make up, however her face still seems bold and recognisable.

Layout
I like the layout of this CD cover as is is very mixed, however it all fits together because each side of the digipak/CD is very alike to eachother but all different. This is possibly due to the idea that the artist wants to metaphorically show every side of herself through this album. I believe that this is very important as I will be able to do that with my own digipak/CD.

Digipak Analysis - Lorde

This digipak is for Lorde's album 'Pure Heroine'. I like the style of this digipak as it is very simplistic but bold.

Font/Text
The font and text on this digipak is very minimalistic and simple which is usually this artist's style. Aside from this, the digipak is very striking to the eye. The music on the CD is all very slow/dark, therefore no bright colours are needed on the digipak. The text on the whole digipak is in bold, capital letters and in w white/silver shade. I like this idea of minimalism as it is still stylish and 'up to date' along side other music within this genre. On the back of the digipak, each song title is written in the same format at the title on the front of it.

Image
The image printed onto the back of the digipak is a simple line drawing logo, representing Lorde, including her very thick wavy hair. Apart from this small logo, there is no other main images on the digipak. Considering that there is no real image of the artist herself suggests that she may have no interest in publicising her image to the public but would just like to release her music for anybody to listen to. However, I may not use this style in my own digipak but I will experiment in may different styles.

Music Video Analysis - Charlie XCX

Here I am analysing a music video of the song 'Boom Clap' by Charli XCX, a song which was recently featured in a popular film. The music video includes brief clips from the film, which I will not do in my own video, however there are clips from the artists input into the video which I will use in my own as i really like the style of it.
The video is directed by Sing J. Lee and was filmed in Amsterdam therefore a lot of attractions and simple shots are used throughout the video.

Camera Angles
The camera angles throughout this video usually consists of mid shots and simple shots of the artist. Throughout the video, there is brief clips of the featured movie this song was used for which made the video different to most music videos and gives an interesting imput into it. However, I am not going to be using this format for my own video as it is not featured in any films. On the other hand, during the video where the artist is focused on, I like how each shot is composed as she is not over exaggerating when she lip syncs, it looks natural and simple.
The video has a very different aspect as it has on screen text in the format of hand writing and 'doodles' which relates to the film poster and book cover. I may use this effect in my video if i believe that it needs more effects to it.

Mise-en-scene
Throughout this music video, the costume that Charli XCX is wearing, is fashionable and stylish as she is seen wearing a light pink jumper, a thick choker and patterned leggings. This artist is considered 'indie pop' therefore her style is different however it is still fun and exciting for viewers to see. Her bright red lipstick is also a very noticable throughout.
Her hair is very dark, thick and wavy, another fashionable style when this video was made. I will collect this research and imput it into my own video.
The lighing in this music video is very naturalistic as it was shot in daylight, but half is shot at night, with street lights as the main lighing use which creates a natural dark light on the artist. There is also a part of the video which includes multicoloured spotted lights which gives a 'party essence' of the video which I may also include in my music video.

Artist/Music Video Analysis - Lorde

I have researched the artist Lorde to possibly use for my music video. Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor (also known as Lorde which is her stage name) is 18 years old creating music within the art/indie pop genre which is slightly different to the other artists I have researched closely into however I feel that my music video will fit with this genre and style.
The music video I have chosen to analyse is a very popular video and song by Lorde which I will pick up ideas for the camera angles, lighing and mise-en-scene. It is directed by Joel Kefali. The video for "Royals" mostly consists of normal teenagers doing unexceptional things in slow motion.

Camera Angles.
The camera angles in this shot represent the music video to be very minimalistic and simple. However, they are composed very well due to the fact that most of the still camera angles are used more than once within the video as these pictures show. The shots are not followed by each other, they are added into the video from between 30 seconds to two minutes apart. The simplistic shots like this are usually shown for up to 5 seconds then shown further on in the video to have changed slightly by adding a prop/person/zooming out of the shot.
The shots of the artist lip-syncing to the song are also very alike to the simplistic shots by having her against a plain wall, with the artist as the main focus. I like this composition for a music video as it is not too distracting for people to be watching and they are able to focus on the music. The shots of Lorde are usually switched between a close up, mid shot and a shot from her head to her shoulders.

Mise-En-Scene
The lighting throughout this video is very natural and bright, as it is mainly filmed in daylight to make it look like an 'everyday' occurance.

The costume/make-up used in this music video includes very basic clothing, such as Lorde wearing a plain white tshirt and a gold necklace which is considered as 'fashionable' and 'trendy'. Lorde is only showing her face and upper half throughout the video therefore that is all that is needed to be considered for her costume. Her hair and make-up is very stylish too, with big curly hair and fashionable dark eye make-up which suggests she may be different from other artists but has her own style. The costume for the boys included in the video is very basic as they are only wearing shorts and boxing gloves with no tshirt as they are acting as the room is a boxing ring. They are often shown without tshirts on. A silver chain is featured in the music video a couple of times which may suggest a meaning within the video.

Analysis
The lyrics of this song are very meaningful, therefore I researched the meanings of this and found that the lyrics suggest that Lorde doesn't care much for diamonds, jewels, money, jet planes, islands etc and living the high life. However the lyrics mention that she has 'no postcode envy' suggesting that she's not proud of where she used to live however she wouldn't change it. Also,  'even though these people don't have enough - they're still happy and able to live their lives, even though society tells them that they should live a certain way and try to strive for something else.' (found on songmeanings.com). It also suggests that she knows she will never be 'royal'.

Target Audience Research

The artist I have chosen usually has a target audience of around young teens to young adults. However, her music may appeal to many other audiences of other ages.
The young teens to young adults age group may enjoy this genre of music as it is catchy, has rich, mature vocals and has a slight 'party essence'. The age group that Lorde is in relates to this target audience therefore it is the typican age group she would target her music at.
In my music video, I will interpret Lorde's style into my video as they are able to reach out to the target audience and connect with them easily.

Record Label Research

Republic Records is an American record company that operates as a division of Universal Music Group. It was founded by Monte Lipman and Avery Lipman in 1995. Republic Records have many well known, popular artists such as Amy Winehouse, Coldplay, Drake, Demi Lovato and Florence And The Machine.
Lorde, the artist I have chosen for my music video is also signed to Republic Records and Lava Records with Universal/Republic Records as a parent company.

Lava Records is an American based label founded by Jason Flom (one of the most succesful record men of the past 20 years".
Lava Records has many artists signed to it, including Lorde, Jessie  and Black Veil Brides.
